MIRROR THREE: MENTAL FILTER
Everyone has a unique way of looking at the world. The
problem is the way people look at it sometimes makes things
appear different than they actually are.
An excellent example of this happens to
elderly ladies who have cataracts. When people develop
cataracts, the lens inside the eye takes on a yellowish brown
color as the cataract starts to form. This yellowish
discoloration creates an effect that is similar to wearing
yellow sunglasses.
Colors are no longer true, and in this
case, the color deficiency shows up when they apply makeup to
their face. They don't get the color right. They
apply large amounts of rouge to their cheeks until the color
looks normal through their eyes, and the result is that their
cheeks are extremely red in the eyes of the rest of the world.
That's the way a mental filter works.
You think you are seeing the world in the proper way, but the
colors are off. When you paint a picture of your world and
show it to other people, they immediately realize that the
colors are wrong. Your mental filter painted your world in
anomalous colors.
