STAKES AND MISTAKES
When elephants are babies, their
trainers use rope to tether one leg to a stake that has been
securely driven into the ground. The young elephant tries to
roam around, but the short tether keeps him right where he is.
He can walk a small distance, but never far.
When the elephant is fully grown, the
trainer uses the same small tether to attach the adult elephant
to a stake in the ground. The elephant could easily break the
rope or pull the stake out, but he doesn’t do it. In his brain
He believes that he is shackled to an immoveable stake. A small
rope and stake immobilize him. A mistake controls his life.
The same thing happens to us when we
grow up. We have all kinds of tethers and stakes that exist
only in our mind.
