MIRROR THREE: MENTAL FILTER II
If you look at the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh, you see his
distorted representations of reality. His broad strokes of
color paint a world very different from the one in which
everyone else lives. He painted the world through his own
unique mental filter, and hence, we have art that reflects his
compromised mental status. His paintings record the
deterioration of his condition as his bizarre mental filter
reflects an increasingly distorted view of the world.
I once worked with a physician who tended to
focus on the dark side of life, and he expressed his pessimistic
view by wearing a lapel pin in the shape of a dark cloud.
Although he didn't have a problem with depression, people with
depression do look on the dark side, and a single negative event
can instantly activate a dark filter that colors everything in
their life.
This mirror is difficult to destroy,
because the reflected image looks normal to a person suffering
from depression. If no one told them differently, they
wouldn't have any idea that the mental filter was coloring their
life in an adverse manner.
Destroying this mirror requires help from
other people. With a little help from your friends or from
a therapist, you will be able to detect and eliminate a mental
filter that is coloring your world.
Pick up your sledge hammer and experience the joy of smashing
the mental filters in your mind. This is definitely a
mirror that you can live without.
